Budapest is Hungary's capital and largest city, located in the the northern part of the country, scenically situated on the Danube River. It is one of the most beautiful and pleasant European cities, not without reason, called the "Paris of the East" due to its highly picturesque scenery and architecture. Budapest impresses with its multitude of charming squares, streets, and monuments. The city is famous for its beautiful neo-Gothic Parliament building and Gellert Hill with its 19th-century citadel. The Andrássy city thoroughfare, built in an eclectic style, is also a prominent feature of this city's landscape. Budapest's finest monuments are, among others, the Royal Castle, the Gothic St. Matthias Church, and the Romanesque Fisherman's Tower. In 1987, Budapest was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the cultural and architectural significance of the Danube River banks, the Buda Castle district, and Andrássy Avenue.
